What is it

Botulinum toxin, popularised under the brand name BOTOX®, has revolutionised facial rejuvenation since the late 1990s as a non-surgical, safe, and effective way to eliminate the tired and tense appearance of the face by significantly softening or eliminating facial wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced in a laboratory that blocks the release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, thereby preventing or weakening the action of the involved muscles. This results in the reduction or disappearance of wrinkles caused by habitual muscle contraction.

There are several muscle groups in the face whose repeated and constant contraction causes the formation of wrinkles — on the forehead (frontal muscle, which causes horizontal forehead lines), above and between the eyebrows (corrugator and depressor muscles, which cause vertical and oblique frown lines between the eyes and at the top of the nose), and around the eyes, known as crow’s feet (caused by contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle).

Who is it for

Botulinum toxin is indicated for individuals who wish to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines, as well as to treat certain medical conditions.

Wrinkles and Expression Lines:
People with wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and around the mouth.

Gummy Smile:
People who show an excessive amount of gum when smiling may benefit from the treatment.

Platysmal Bands:
Individuals with prominent neck bands who do not wish to undergo surgery can opt for this treatment to soften the appearance of the neck.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating):
Although not strictly aesthetic, people with excessive sweating in the underarms, hands, or feet can be treated with botulinum toxin.

Facial Asymmetry and Muscle Spasms:
It may be indicated for the treatment of temporary facial asymmetries or muscle spasms.

Although botulinum toxin is widely used, there are certain contraindications to its application:

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Neuromuscular Disorders:
Individuals with conditions such as myasthenia gravis or Eaton-Lambert syndrome.

Infection at the Injection Site:
Should not be applied to areas of infected skin.

Bleeding Disorders:
People with coagulation disorders or taking anticoagulant medication should avoid treatment due to the risk of bruising.

Considerations:
Before opting for botulinum toxin treatment, it is important to attend a medical consultation to assess suitability, discuss expectations, and understand possible side effects. Only a qualified doctor can determine if the treatment is appropriate, based on the individual’s medical history and aesthetic goals.

Technical description

The application of botulinum toxin is a relatively quick and minimally invasive procedure.

Topical Anaesthetic (optional):
In some cases, a topical anaesthetic cream may be applied to minimise discomfort.

Injection:
Using a fine needle, the doctor injects small amounts of botulinum toxin into the facial muscles.
The number of injections depends on the size of the treatment area.

Post-treatment:
Results begin to appear within a few days, with full effects typically visible after one to two weeks.
The effects of botulinum toxin last approximately three to six months, after which the treatment can be repeated as needed.
