Breast Lift with Implants

What is it

Also known as augmentation mastopexy, this is a surgery that combines breast lifting and aesthetic repositioning of the areola through the removal of excess skin and remodelling of the breast tissue, with additional increase in volume and projection through the use of breast implants. This provides more volume to the upper pole and cleavage, redefining the contour in a more attractive way.

Who is it for

It is indicated for women who wish to lift the breasts and, at the same time, increase their volume, improving the appearance, contour, and projection of the upper pole and cleavage. It is a common request among women dissatisfied with the appearance, sagging, and loss of breast volume that has occurred over time, often as a result of:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Weight variations
  • Age
  • Heredity

It is indicated for women who wish to improve the appearance, volume, and projection of the breasts but believe that mastopexy, without the additional inclusion of implants, would not achieve the desired volume and projection. Candidates for mastopexy with implants should:

  • Be healthy
  • Be non-smokers
  • Have expectations suited to their body situation and intrinsic conditions, such as the elasticity and looseness of the skin, as well as the type and location of the resulting scars

Scars

The location and extent of the scars are adapted to each case, depending on the degree of sagging and loss of elasticity, as well as the amount of breast tissue available for remodelling.

In very mild mastopexies, the surgery may be performed through an incision limited to the periareolar area, but it generally also involves a vertical incision below the areola, and in some cases, a horizontal incision may also be necessary (resulting in an inverted T-shaped scar), camouflaged in the lower breast crease, whose length depends on the amount of excess skin to be removed.

Technical Description

Mastopexy is performed through incisions that vary in location and extent, through which the skin is removed, the nipple–areola complex is repositioned higher, and the breast tissue is remodelled and supported. The desired projection and volume are enhanced through the placement of breast implants. During the breast remodelling process, asymmetry in volume and the size of the areolas are also corrected, if necessary.

Type of Anaesthesia

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, often using a laryngeal mask — a lighter type of general anaesthesia that allows postoperative recovery to be faster and better tolerated.

Results and Benefits

The results of mastopexy surgery with implants are immediately visible, through the increase in volume and improvement of the aesthetic appearance of the breasts and cleavage. In the following weeks, there is improvement of the associated swelling, as well as softening of the scars, with a very favourable result in terms of self-image.

The benefits are felt at various levels, including:

  • Favourable impact on self-image and body harmony, with increased self-esteem and self-confidence in social interaction
  • Greater freedom in the choice of clothing

Recovery

  • 2–5 days to return to work

Post-operative Care

After a short hospital stay of around 24 hours, recovery can normally take place at home.

  • The prescribed medication and all recommendations from the medical team must be followed.
  • The patient will be accompanied by the medical team for dressing changes for 10–12 days.
  • Some limitation of arm movements is advised during the first week, while daily personal care and routine activities can be maintained.
  • Intense exercise and strenuous effort should be avoided during the first days.
  • A postoperative bra should be worn for 4–8 weeks.
