It is the ideal guide for planning your trip and making the most of your stay in this unique destination.

Walks along the levadas

The levadas are irrigation channels found in mountainous areas on the island of Madeira. They were created due to the need to bring large quantities of water from the north-facing slopes, where it is abundant, to the south side of the island.

With a total length of around 3,000 km, it is possible to hike along the water channels, which allow visitors to get in touch with nature and discover incredible landscapes.

The levadas are part of a series of protected areas, including the Madeira Natural Park and the Funchal Ecological Park.

Cabo Girão Viewpoint

The Cabo Girão viewpoint is the highest cape in Europe, standing at 580 metres high. It is famous for its suspended glass platform (known as the skywalk), which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal.

Basket Cars

The famous basket cars are a unique form of transport that offer an unparalleled experience.

Handcrafted from wicker and wood, they have two or three seats and are driven by two ‘carreiros’ (drivers), dressed in white and wearing straw hats, who skilfully use their own boots, with thick rubber soles, as brakes.

The journey begins in Monte (a small village of exuberant beauty, located in the mountains above the city of Funchal) and ends in Funchal (in the Livramento district). It is a downhill route of about 2 km, which is guaranteed to provide moments of pure excitement.

One suggestion for travelling from Funchal to Monte and vice versa is to take the cable car.

Cable car trip to Monte

The cable car, located in the Old Town, connects Funchal to Monte in about 15 minutes. This trip offers a panoramic view over the bay of Funchal and the surrounding mountains of Monte.

Once there, you can visit the fantastic Monte Palace Tropical Garden and the Church of Monte, where the tomb of Charles of Habsburg, the last emperor of Austria, is located. You can also enjoy a ride in the famous basket car.

Farmer’s Market

One of the most iconic places to visit is the famous colourful Farmers’ Market, where Madeira’s most beautiful flowers are on display and all kinds of exotic fruits are available to sample.

Pebble beaches

Pebble beaches are the most characteristic beaches on the island. Although many now have access points to the sea, built to facilitate entry into the water, others remain largely untouched by human intervention.

Natural sandy beaches

Although rare, dark sandy beaches of volcanic origin are also natural to the island. Some have stunning scenery, such as Prainha in Caniçal (next to Ponta de São Lourenço) or Praia do Seixal, whose black sand is framed by green mountains, creating a perfect contrast that allows you to enjoy a beautiful landscape.

Porto Moniz natural pools

The pools at Porto Moniz, in the north, are of volcanic origin, with rocks formed by lava, into which the sea flows naturally, bringing crystal clear water. An experience not to be missed.

Seaside resorts

There are also excellent beach resorts, the most famous of which is the Lido in Funchal, with direct access to the sea via steps and natural saltwater pools, which are renewed daily. In this city, there are similar facilities in the beach areas of Barreirinha, Poças do Gomes, Ponta Gorda and Clube Naval.

Porto Santo Beach

The famous Porto Santo beach is renowned for its natural beauty and the therapeutic properties of its golden sand, which stretches for around nine kilometres. Bathed by crystal clear, calm waters, it is a destination that is highly appreciated by both residents and visitors, who find this setting a true invitation to rest and well-being.

Golden sand beaches

There are also some golden sand beaches, such as Calheta and Machico on the south coast, whose sand came from Morocco and which are very popular leisure spots.

Tropical fruits of Madeira

The island’s subtropical climate allows for the cultivation of an exceptional variety of tropical fruits. Highlights include passion fruit, pineapple, mango, cherimoya, avocado and Madeira banana, all renowned for their intense flavour and natural freshness. These fruits are a constant presence in Madeiran desserts, juices and cocktails.

Grilled Limpets (Lapas)

Served with butter, garlic and lemon, grilled lapas are an irresistible snack by the sea. Their simplicity and freshness make them one of the most authentic and sought-after experiences for visitors.

Bolo do Caco (Typical Bread)

More than just bread, it is a gastronomic icon. Baked on a hot stone, bolo do caco is soft and served with garlic butter, an essential accompaniment to any Madeiran meal, whether with grilled fish or meat.

Scabbardfish with Banana

A classic regional dish, combining the intense flavour of scabbardfish with the sweetness of fried banana. It is a dish that reflects the perfect fusion between the sea and the land, representing Madeira’s culinary identity and creativity.

Madeira-style kebab

One of the island’s most emblematic dishes, the skewer is made with tender beef, seasoned with salt, garlic and bay leaves, traditionally roasted on a laurel stick. Served with fried corn and homemade bread, it is a symbol of conviviality and Madeiran tradition.
