What is it

Abdominoplasty is a surgical technique designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen, making it smoother, firmer, and more aesthetically pleasing, while enhancing overall body contour and definition.

This is achieved by removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal area, and, when necessary, correcting the separation of the abdominal muscles.

Pregnancy and significant weight fluctuations can cause the rectus abdominis muscles to separate, giving the abdomen a more rounded appearance. In such cases, the skin often loses elasticity, develops stretch marks, becomes loose, and forms folds that can be corrected through abdominoplasty.

When abdominoplasty is combined with abdominal liposuction, the procedure is called lipoabdominoplasty.

Who is it for

Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are emotionally mature individuals who clearly understand their motivations for undergoing surgery. Realistic expectations are essential — the procedure provides improvement, not absolute perfection.

Typical candidates include those who:

  • Maintain a stable weight;
  • Are in good general health;
  • Feel dissatisfied with the appearance of their abdomen (such as “apron belly,” sagging skin, localised fat, or abdominal bulging);
  • Have realistic expectations;
  • Do not plan to become pregnant in the near future.

Scars

Abdominoplasty leaves a periumbilical (around the navel) scar and a discreet horizontal scar across the lower abdomen, usually hidden by underwear or a bikini. It is similar in position to a caesarean scar but longer, depending on how much skin needs to be removed.

In the case of a mini-abdominoplasty, the scar is shorter.

Technical description

When combined with liposuction, the procedure is referred to as lipoabdominoplasty.

For mild cases with a small skin apron, a mini-abdominoplasty can be performed, resulting in a smaller scar.

In more extensive cases, where there is excess skin not only in the abdominal region but also around the back, a circumferential body lift (belt lipectomy) may be the best option.

Type of anaesthesia

Abdominoplasty is performed under general or epidural anaesthesia.

While patients may express preferences, the final decision lies with the anaesthetist, who determines the safest and most suitable method based on the patient’s medical history and the combination of procedures being performed.

Results and benefits

The aesthetic improvement of the abdomen is significant — resulting in a more contoured, toned, and smooth abdominal area.

Stretch marks located below the navel are often removed during surgery. When combined with liposuction of other body areas, the overall body contour improvement is even more noticeable.

The benefits of abdominoplasty extend beyond aesthetics: repairing weakened abdominal muscles often alleviates lower back pain and posture issues.

Equally important is the boost in self-esteem — patients frequently report feeling more confident and comfortable with their bodies, noticing improvements in clothing fit and motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

For many, this surgery marks the beginning of a complete lifestyle transformation.

Recovery

Most patients can return to work within two weeks.

Post-operative care

After a short hospital stay of one to two days, recovery continues at home. The first week typically requires more rest, followed by a gradual return to daily activities.

Follow-up consultations are usually scheduled during the first and second weeks post-surgery.

A compression garment should be worn for 4 to 8 weeks to support healing and reduce swelling. Intense physical activities must be avoided for at least six weeks.

Patients should take prescribed medication, maintain good hydration, and follow a balanced diet. Light physical activity, such as walking, can aid recovery and optimise results.

Lymphatic drainage massages may begin two weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and improve healing.

Smoking must be avoided during recovery, as smokers are at higher risk of complications such as poor healing and reduced blood circulation in the tissues.
