Areola Reduction

What is it

Areolar reduction is a relatively simple surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia, designed to decrease and harmonise the size of the areolas, making them more proportional to the breast. The goal is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the breast area, restoring a more balanced and natural look.

This procedure is also commonly performed as a complementary step during breast reduction or mastopexy (breast lift) surgeries, contributing to a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing final result.

Who is it for

Areolar reduction surgery is indicated for women who are dissatisfied with the size or appearance of their areolas, whether due to aesthetic concerns or changes caused by hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or ageing.

It is particularly recommended in cases of asymmetry in size, shape, or position of the areolas, allowing for the restoration of harmony between both breasts and improving self-confidence regarding body image.

Scars

The surgical result leaves a periareolar scar, discreetly positioned along the natural border between the areola and the surrounding skin (the areolo-cutaneous junction).

This location allows for natural camouflage of the scar, which tends to fade progressively over time, resulting in a highly satisfactory and almost imperceptible aesthetic outcome once healing is complete.

Technical description

The procedure involves precisely planned periareolar incisions that outline the new, desired areola size. The surgeon removes the excess areolar tissue and, if necessary, a small amount of adjacent skin, adjusting the surrounding area to ensure a smooth and symmetrical transition.

The surgery is meticulous and minimally invasive, allowing for accurate, natural-looking results and a quick recovery.

Type of anaesthesia

Areolar reduction is usually performed under local anaesthesia, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure and avoiding the need for hospitalisation.

In some cases, a light sedative may be administered for additional relaxation if the patient prefers.

Results and benefits

The results are immediately visible, with a clear aesthetic improvement of the breast area and a harmonious reduction of the areolas, which become more proportionate and symmetrical.

Beyond the visual enhancement, patients often experience increased satisfaction and confidence, as the correction of this detail can relieve long-standing discomfort or self-consciousness.

The final outcome is natural, balanced, and long-lasting.

Recovery

Recovery is simple and quick, allowing patients to return to daily and professional activities almost immediately.

In most cases, it is possible to resume work on the same day or the following day, with no need for extended rest or major limitations.

Post-operative care

After surgery, it is essential to follow all prescribed medication and the surgeon’s recommendations carefully.

No special care is usually required, though it is advised to avoid wide or sudden arm movements during the first few days to protect the healing process.

Daily activities can be maintained as normal, and follow-up consultations ensure a safe recovery and a stable, long-lasting aesthetic result.
