Breast Augmentation

What is it

It is the most commonly performed aesthetic surgery in the world. It is a surgical procedure designed to increase the volume and modify the shape of the breasts through the placement of breast implants (prostheses).

There are various types of implants that differ in shape, projection, and volume, allowing each woman to select the most suitable option to achieve her desired results and expectations.

Who is it for

This procedure is intended for women who are dissatisfied with the size, projection, shape, or symmetry of their breasts and who wish to improve their appearance and body harmony.

Candidates for breast augmentation should have realistic expectations regarding their body type. The goal is to achieve aesthetic balance, which must take into account factors such as skin elasticity, firmness, and the existing breast volume and shape.

Scars

The incision can be made in one of several locations: the lower edge of the areola (periareolar), in the inframammary fold, or in the axilla (armpit).

  • Periareolar incision: Made along the transition between the areola and the surrounding skin, resulting in a nearly imperceptible scar. It is a preferred approach, particularly when the areolas are large or asymmetric, as these can be corrected simultaneously.
  • Inframammary incision: Hidden within the natural fold under the breast, providing excellent aesthetic results and therefore widely used.
  • Axillary incision: Though it can produce a discreet scar, it is less commonly used due to its greater technical complexity and less direct access to the implant site.

Technical Description

Through a small incision — leaving a nearly invisible scar — implants are placed whose characteristics (texture, shape, volume, and projection) are selected according to the patient’s expectations and physical anatomy. These aspects are discussed in detail with the surgeon to determine the most suitable choice.

Type of Implants

Implants differ by:

  • Shape: Round or anatomical (teardrop-shaped)
  • Projection: Low, moderate, high, or extra-high projection
  • Surface: Smooth or textured
  • Content: The implants used contain highly cohesive silicone gel, which provides natural flexibility and movement.

Type of Anaesthesia

The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia using a laryngeal mask, a lighter form of anaesthesia that allows for faster and more comfortable postoperative recovery.

Results and Benefits

Breast augmentation is one of the leading procedures in aesthetic surgery due to its immediate and highly gratifying results. Although the final result should only be evaluated a few months after surgery — once the breasts have adapted to their new shape and volume — the initial postoperative outcome already produces a significant improvement in self-esteem.

Key advantages include:

  • Rapid, visible results with a relatively short procedure
  • Quick recovery period
  • Immediate enhancement of the neckline
  • Improved body balance and rejuvenated appearance
  • Expanded wardrobe options

Recovery

Most patients can return to work within 2 to 5 days after surgery.

Post-operative Care

Postoperative care following breast augmentation includes:

  • Wearing a surgical bra: It must be worn for the period prescribed by the surgeon to help support the implants and reduce swelling.
  • Avoiding intense physical activity: Refrain from heavy lifting, upper-body strain, or vigorous exercise for at least 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Resting: Sleep on your back and allow sufficient rest during the first few weeks.
  • Scar care: Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully. Scar treatment may include prescribed creams to minimise visibility.
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol: Both can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

Adhering closely to medical instructions is essential to ensure a safe recovery and achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome after breast augmentation.
