Golden sand beaches

There are also some golden sand beaches, such as Calheta and Machico on the south coast, whose sand came from Morocco and which are very popular leisure spots.

Porto Santo Beach

The famous Porto Santo beach is renowned for its natural beauty and the therapeutic properties of its golden sand, which stretches for around nine kilometres. Bathed by crystal clear, calm waters, it is a destination that is highly appreciated by both residents and visitors, who find this setting a true invitation to rest and well-being.

Seaside resorts

There are also excellent beach resorts, the most famous of which is the Lido in Funchal, with direct access to the sea via steps and natural saltwater pools, which are renewed daily. In this city, there are similar facilities in the beach areas of Barreirinha, Poças do Gomes, Ponta Gorda and Clube Naval.

Porto Moniz natural pools

The pools at Porto Moniz, in the north, are of volcanic origin, with rocks formed by lava, into which the sea flows naturally, bringing crystal clear water. An experience not to be missed.

Natural sandy beaches

Although rare, dark sandy beaches of volcanic origin are also natural to the island. Some have stunning scenery, such as Prainha in Caniçal (next to Ponta de São Lourenço) or Praia do Seixal, whose black sand is framed by green mountains, creating a perfect contrast that allows you to enjoy a beautiful landscape.

Pebble beaches

Pebble beaches are the most characteristic beaches on the island. Although many now have access points to the sea, built to facilitate entry into the water, others remain largely untouched by human intervention.
