Basket Cars

The famous basket cars are a unique form of transport that offer an unparalleled experience.

Handcrafted from wicker and wood, they have two or three seats and are driven by two ‘carreiros’ (drivers), dressed in white and wearing straw hats, who skilfully use their own boots, with thick rubber soles, as brakes.

The journey begins in Monte (a small village of exuberant beauty, located in the mountains above the city of Funchal) and ends in Funchal (in the Livramento district). It is a downhill route of about 2 km, which is guaranteed to provide moments of pure excitement.

One suggestion for travelling from Funchal to Monte and vice versa is to take the cable car.
